Cody is an artist with a very particular vision. This can be an amazing asset when pitching frames for animated loops.
On the other hand, it can be terrifying when you tell him you have a cool idea that would push him way out of his comfort zone.
I've gotten to do both.
When Cody came to us looking for a video for his new single What If, we weren't sure we could help.
We had ideas, oh we had plenty!
But animation is expensive.
And his song was over four minutes long.
But there was something in the email that kept haunting me "classic Hollywood".
I don't know why people never think of animation in that phrase (well I do, but I don't think I'm allowed to say 'they lack imagination and wonder' on my public site) but we immediately thought we should look to some hybrid classics, like Mary Poppins!
In the initial pitch there were moving set walls and a flying car
and
and
and
and then.
We found out we had to shoot it in a day.
We condensed the idea down to a set, and an LED wall, and the result...well I'm pretty proud of it myself.
In our series with anime Cody Fry, we worked to provide some fan service to the TikTok audience.
Cody's fan's loved dubbing his music to anime supercuts (who doesn't).
Cody, being an artist who really genuinely loves his fans, wanted to gift them his own version.
What followed was myself and my team trying to create one video that fully appealed to the calm and whimsical
nature of Mr Fry (I hear a symphony).
And one (Elanor Rigby) that felt like our high school emo selves could toss it on in the background while rewatching
the opening cinematic to Kingdom Hearts (Na-nananana).
